Orientalist schools have been diverse in their intellectual orientations, yet they often shared a common connection with the colonial context in Arab and Islamic regions, particularly in Algeria. Much of this scholarship reflected a Eurocentric perspective that emphasized ideas of cultural and civilizational superiority, sometimes influenced by religious bias, and contributed to misrepresentations of Islam. To support these efforts, significant academic and research resources were employed. At the same time, Orientalist thought was not uniform, as it included a range of positions from highly biased interpretations to more balanced and moderate approaches. This article offers a comparative analysis of classical and contemporary approaches to Orientalism, focusing on the main intellectual and methodological changes that have shaped the field over time. It also highlights the differences between the two main trends—classical and contemporary—while examining their development and impact. This analysis helps to clarify the conceptual framework of Orientalism, its stages, and its intellectual directions, as well as their implications for the Maghreb region.
