This thesis examines the construction of Algerian national identity (1930–2000) through the roles of political and religious authorities within the context of post-colonial state-building. Using historical, social, and political perspectives, it analyzes language, ethnicity, religious discourse, education, and political ideologies as drivers of identity. It also details state language policies, particularly Arabization, and responses to linguistic conflict and the Berber crisis, demonstrating their impact on cohesion and division. The thesis further explores the “Islamization” of society, the official mosque discourse, Sufi lodges, and Islamic intellectual currents (Sufi, Salafist, and modernist) and their interaction with political power. Methodologically, the research combines historical analytical and deconstructive tools with qualitative research, including the application of the Delphi method to elicit expert opinions. Based on theoretical and empirical findings, the thesis proposes a contemporary conceptual model that embraces pluralism, acknowledges diversity, and integrates digital transformation and digital identity. The results confirm the strong influence of political and religious factors in shaping a composite national identity that includes coexistence, diversity, and cohesion.
