Abstract

The paper deals with cultural dominance and identity issue in translation theory. It focuses on how western colonial and obsessive tendency lasted even after the independence of almost all colonized nations. It shows how translation theory set up to reinforce such tendency. Therefore the paper stresses on the role of translation in maintaining and protecting identity and cultural diversity. It is an attempt to show how translation, again, could be a means of domination and diversity elimination to exercise absolute control upon the others. We aim to demonstrate the link between postcolonial translation and orientalism, which had drawn a distorted image of the former colonies trying to promote false ideas. Light will be also shed on some of translation theories that rejected the uniformity of culture by introducing new strategies and new techniques that maintain the difference considering any modification of the source culture as a distortion.
