Abstract

At the end of the Spanish civil war, tens of thousands of Republican refugees fled to Algeria. Many of them ended up in internment camps, where they were mistreated, vilified and locked up by the French authorities. Based on Ricardo Baldó's “Exiliados españoles en el Sahara 1939-1943 (Un punto negro en la historia)ˮ, this article aims to offer a critical reflection on some key stages of the Republican exodus to Algeria, as well as to describe the experience of the exiles on Algerian soil. Baldó's work offers remarkable descriptions and indications about life, trade, traditions, religion, climate and landscape, especially those of Bogharí. The aim is to highlight them by detecting the Spanish author's vision of all these
