Gsell Stéphane; A Master and Pioneer of Academic History in Algeria — Advocate for the Social History of Tribes writing an intellectual biography of Gsell Stéphane (1864–1932) is a rare undertaking within Algerian historical writing in the Arabic language. As François Dosse suggests, one may ask what aspects of a biographer’s life are worth preserving or reflecting upon. Our approach aims to highlight how Gsell examined the social history of tribes in ancient Algeria, well before the emergence of the Annales school — a historiographical movement that paved the way for social history and historical anthropology.
