The Portico welcomed scholars from every Maghrebi country. During the Ottoman era, it became a dynamic hub of scholarly exchange and cultural activity, primarily due to Maghrebi intellectuals who selected Egypt for their academic and spiritual pursuits. This development followed a series of far-reaching transformations in the Maghreb during the early 16th century, which shifted the axis of knowledge migration toward Egypt and the broader Islamic East. In contrast, al-Andalus had previously been the principal destination for seekers of learning. Foremost among these changes was the fall of Granada in 1492, which, along with subsequent Christian incursions along the Maghrebi coasts, generated widespread anxiety and instability. Maghrebi scholars, collaborating with those of Al-Azhar, formed the core of the Egyptian intellectual elite and played a significant role in invigorating Egypt’s cultural scene. They attained prominent positions across religious and academic spheres, integrated seamlessly into all social strata, and contributed actively to various domains of public life.
