Portfolio Assessment, Can It Be A Multifunctional Tool? An Investigation Of Its Impact On Both Efl Learners’ Critical Thinking And Speaking Skills

تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى تحديد تأثير السجل التقييمي البرتفوليو على التفكير النقدي ومهارات التحدث لدى طلاب السنة الثالثة في قسم اللغة الإنجليزية بجامعة قالمة. ومن أجل ذلك، تم الاعتماد على الدراسة التجريبية إضافة الى مقابلة مع الطلاب للكشف عن اراءهم تجاه استخدام السجل التقييمي البرتفوليو. لقد تم اختيار مجموعتين ضابطة وتجريبية تتكون كل منهما من 20 طالبًا وتخصيص اختبارات أولية و بعدية. كشفت العلامات المسجلة في اختبارات المجموعة التجريبية أن الطلاب قد حصلوا على علامات أعلى في غالبية مهارات التحدث الفرعية، وا ن النتائج المتحصل عليها في ما يخص التفكير النقدي كانت افضل إذا ما قورنت بتلك المتحصل عليها في الاختبار الاولي. علاوة على ذلك، أظهر المشاركون موقفًا إيجابيًا تجاه استعمال السجل التقييمي. وبناءً على هذه النتائج، فقد اثبتت هذه الدراسة فعالية السجل التقييمي في تحسين التفكير النقدي ومهارات التحدث لدى الطلاب. Résumé Ce travail de recherche a pour objectif l’étude des effets de l'évaluation du portfolio sur la pensée critique et les compétences orales des étudiants de troisième année au département d'anglais de l'Université de Guelma. Pour cerner cet objectif, une méthode mixte a été utilisée. Plus précisément, une étude expérimentale, et un entretien avec les étudiants pour révéler leurs perceptions vis-à-vis de l'utilisation de l'évaluation du portfolio. Deux groupes témoins et expérimentaux de 20 étudiants chacun ont été sélectionnés. Les notes enregistrées à partir des tests t du groupe expérimental révèlent que les participants ont atteint des scores plus élevés dans la majorité des compétences orales et ont un niveau de pensée critique plus élevé par rapport à ceux marqués dans le pré-test. De plus, les participants montrent une attitude positive envers l’utilisation de l'évaluation du portfolio. Par conséquence, cette recherche prouve l'efficacité de l'évaluation du portfolio dans le développement de la pensée critique et des compétences orales des étudiants. Abstract The current work aims at exploring the impact of portfolio assessment on third year students’ critical thinking and speaking skills at the department of English at Guelma University. In order to reach this aim, a mixed method has been used. More precisely, a quasi-experiment to investigate the aforementioned impact, and a post experiment interview to reveal students’ perceptions towards the use of portfolio assessment. Two control and experimental groups of 20 students each were selected and assigned pre-post-tests. The scores recorded from the experimental group t-tests reveal that the participants attained higher scores in the majority of the speaking sub-skills, and have a higher level of critical thinking if compared to those marked in the pre-test. Moreover, the participants show a positive attitude towards the implementation of portfolio assessment. Based on those results, the investigation proves the effectiveness of portfolio assessment in promoting students’ critical thinking and speaking skills.
