Abstract In literature, madness is a subject that fascinates and all the works devoted to it are the tangible proof of this. However, the treatment, the vision, the presentation and the fictionalization of this subject varies from one writer to another. In our contribution, we deal with madness in the work Les Échelles du Levant by A. Maalouf. We try to dissect the discourse of Ossyane the "madman" who accurately describes the hell of his madness and allows the reader, at the same time, to glimpse the self-image of the being at the top of mental and emotional disorder. At the same time, this individual madness is only the result of another that presents itself on a large scale : the human scale and which is devastating to its extent.
