تمثل وحدة الفونولوجيا أو علم الأصوات الوظيفي وحدة أساسية ومفصلية في تكوين المختص الأرطوفوني, باعتبارها تمكِّنه من فهم مستوى مهم من مستويات اللغة وهو المستوى الفونولوجي, فالمعارف الذي يتلقاها الطالب توضح له آلية سير النظام الفونولوجي لدى الفرد العادي, وبهذا يتعرف من خلالها على الأدوار المختلفة التي تؤديها الوحدات اللغوية في عملية التواصل اللغوي, وهذا ما يجعله قادرا على تحليل السلسلة الكلامية إلى وحدات حسب وظائفها.
يعالج هذا المقياس مفهوم الفونولوجيا, و الفروع التي تتفرع عنه و مختلف الوحدات الفونولوجية التي تكوّن السلسلة الكلامية كالفونام والنغمة, و يوضح طريقة التحليل الفونولوجي التي يقوم بها عالم الفونولوجيا لدراسة النظام الفونولوجي للغة ما, ويشرح النظام المقطعي في اللغة العربية وأنواع المقاطع, وأهمية النغمة والنبر في النظام التواصلي اللغوي.
