This dissertation examines the translation of the Qur’anic duality of “Good and Evil” into French from a cognitive-pragmatic perspective. It adopts Relevance Theory as a theoretical and procedural framework for analyzing and evaluating Qur’anic translations. The study seeks to move beyond traditional approaches that limit translation assessment to linguistic fidelity and stylistic fluency by emphasizing communicative intention and cognitive effect. A comparative analysis was conducted on seventeen Qur’anic examples across four French translations by Muhammad Hamidullah, Jacques Berque, Zineb Abdelaziz, and Malek Chebel. The analysis draws on concepts such as interpretive resemblance, processing effort, and cognitive effect. The findings reveal significant differences in the translators’ ability to reconstruct the Qur’anic cognitive context and achieve optimal relevance. The study concludes that effective Qur’anic translation depends not on literal equivalence alone, but on conveying the intended meanings and cognitive impact of the original text.
