Abstract
This study seeks to emphasize the significance of the Seljuks in Islamic history, as they rose as a political and military entity that played a crucial role in stabilizing the Abbasid Caliphate following its decline. They managed to restore its prestige in name, while maintaining real authority. The Seljuks originated as nomadic Turkmen tribes, subsequently expanding into Khorasan before moving into Iraq in 447 AH/1055 AD under the leadership of ToghrulIer Bek, who pledged allegiance to the Abbasid Caliphate, thereby ending the Buyid's control.
The Seljuks played a role that extended beyond military and political aspects; they implemented economic and social reforms that contributed to the stability of the territories under their governance.
Economically, they enhanced agriculture by creating sophisticated irrigation systems and promoted trade by protecting trade routes and simplifying the transport of goods. They also fostered industrial growth by creating a favorable environment for artisans to produce various metal goods.
In terms of finance, they depended on the feudal system to supply the essential resources for both the army and administration. They also established a taxation system and aimed to regulate public spending by enhancing tax and endowment management, while producing coins that featured the names of their sultans to signify the degree of their authority and influence.
The Seljuks were also focused on implementing social reforms and aimed to bolster societal structure by backing religious and educational institutions like mosques and hospitals (Bimaristans),as well as enhancing internal security. Seljuk society was marked by its various social classes, and its customs were a blend of Islamic and Persian traditions
