Abstract

بحلول ستينيات القرن الثالث قبل الميلاد، ظهر الرومان كمنافس على مسرح الأحداث للقوى البحرية المتوسطية آنذاك -إغريق صقلية والقرطاجيين في الحوض الغربي والقوى الهيللينستية في الحوض الشرقي- وذلك بعد استكمال بسط نفوذهم على شبه الجزيرة الإيطالية بفضل التفوق العسكري لجيوشهم البرية، فوجدوا أنفسهم أمام حتمية الاعتماد على القوة البحرية من أجل بلوغ غايتهم التوسعية في العالم المتوسطية، في سابقة تاريخية لم تتكرر عبر العصور التاريخية اللاحقة .By the sixties of the third century BC, the Romans appeared as a competitor on the scene of events to the Mediterranean maritime powers at that time - the Greeks of Sicily, the Carthaginians in the western basin, and the Hellenistic powers in the eastern basin - after completing the extension of their influence on the Italian peninsula thanks to the military superiority of their land armies. They found themselves faced to the inevitability of relying on naval power in order to achieve their expansionist goal in the Mediterranean world, in a historical precedent that has not been repeated throughout subsequent historical eras.
