In order to answer these questions, we try to define the different concepts, then we discuss the translation strategies established by "Mona Baker”, and the procedures of translation that we use in the analysis of examples. This research focuses on the didactics of simultaneous interpreting. The first chapter describes the evolution of simultaneous interpreting as a universal profession, while the second one is devoted to the teaching of this discipline: we have highlighted teaching simultaneous interpreting while exposing the scientific research attributed to it. In addition, we have proposed a model related to the training of interpreters based on competence. In the third chapter, we presented the case study we conducted at the Institute of Translation of the University of Algiers2. This study is structured around three axes (the level of student interpreters, the teachers' opinions on the problems and solutions related to the teaching of interpreting, an analytical study of the two educational programs). We ended our research with a fourth chapter where we proposed the principles of the curriculum for teaching simultaneous interpreting. Item A Cognitive Contrastive Rhetoric Analysis of English and Arabic in EFL Students’ Writing(University of algiers2 Abu El Kacem Saad Allah جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2021) MEDJEDOUB, Rima; Hamitouche, Fatiha (Directeur de thèse)The present research aimed at suggesting a cognitive perspective to the Contrastive Rhetoric Hypothesis. To do so, I designed a cognitive analytical framework and identified the cognitive rhetorical patterns in 200 Arabic and English short stories written by freshmen and senior students majoring in English, atan Algerian university. The findings proved that there is a transfer of patterns from the mother tongue (Arabic) to the foreign language (English). Hence, the Contrastive Rhetoric Hypothesis is totally valid among beginners and is so to a considerable extent among the more advanced EFL learners.Item A Discourse-Semiotic Analysis of Socio-Cultural Aspects of Television Advertising(University of Algiers II. Faculty of Letters and Languages, 2010) Azzouni, Mouloud; Hamitouche, Fatiha (Directeur de thèse)Nowadays, as a direct consequence of revolutionary advances in technology, TV advertisements (ads) have become omnipresent in our lives. However, they are rarely studied in the context of Algerian academia despite their importance. Being complex ‘coded’ discourses, TV ads need to be ‘decoded’ in order to get their meanings. In an attempt to shed light on the meaning of TV ads, this dissertation proposes an interdisciplinary approach that aims to analyze TV ads by borrowing analytical tools from the fields of semiotics and discourse analysis. The dissertation is a qualitative comparative one, using a discursive-semiotic approach to explore the socio-cultural elements in two TV ads, one in English and the second in Arabic. It is divided into two main parts : a theoretical part and an analytical part. The analysis of the two TV ads (one for the luxury watches Rolex, the other for a mobile telephone company, Nedjma) reveals the efficient use of a considerable amount of socio-cultural signs in the structure of both ads. But what is interesting is that each TV ad adapts those socio-cultural signs and symbols to the nature of the product/service being advertised, and to the environment or context in which it is going to be used. The result is a highly persuasive discourse, characterized by its multimodality. The TV ads benefit at full stretch by the potential for meaning-making, offered by the possibility of combination between different modes of representation (language, image and sound, for instance). The socio-cultural signs and symbols used in the discursive construction of the TV ads are themselves polyvocal. So, when used in combination they offer a wealth of possible meanings; and they create room for connotations. In fact, the analysis shows that it is connotation which takes primacy over denotation in both TV ads. The contribution of this dissertation is that it compares the important socio-cultural elements in the building the discourse of two TV ads and points to areas of similarities and differences.Item A Discursive Approach to Interactions at Faculty Hiring Interviews for an Assistant Lecturer Position(University of algiers2 Abu El Kacem Saad Allah جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2022) TIAIBA, Imane; NEDJA MEBTOUCHE, Fatma Zohra (Directeur de thèse)This study attempts to investigate the faculty-hiring interviews’ (FHI) spoken discourse particularly applicants’ linguistic choices to manage a positive image and gain positive feedback from their interviewers during authentic job interviews for an assistant lecturer position, held in the Department of English language and literature at two Algerian universities: Msila and Setif2. The main thrust of the study is to introduce successful applicants’ strategies to prepare university students for job interview communication. To that end, the study utilized an exploratory descriptive case study design, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative approaches in data analysis. Data were obtained through different research tools during two stages. In the exploratory stage, a survey is conducted with interviewers (N=12), to investigate their perceptions and practices in FHIs. Secondly, official documents that describe the selection and evaluation criteria of the FHIs were analysed including the Anchored Rating Scale (ARS), (April 2018); Circular N°7 dated 28 April 2011 relating to selection criteria for the competition on the basis of qualifications for recruitment to grades in Civil Service (p. 2-3); and Official Journal, N°. 23 dated on 04 May 2008,(p. 22). The descriptive phase applied a micro-level discourse analysis of authentically recorded FHI extracts (N=20) during four recurrent interview moves self-introduction, research presentation, negotiation of expertise and related position tasks, and discussion of future plans. To classify applicants into passing and failing, the study relied on a developed conceptual framework based on the job analysis method identified in the exploratory phase, in addition to a discursive approach adapted from the literature according to the communicative purposes of the FHI. The discursive approach to applicants’ interactions stands on a fusion of different theoretical and analytical research strands for spoken discourse analysis (drawing on Systemic Functional Linguistics, Impression Management, Politeness and Cooperative Principles). Findings revealed that passing candidates constructed a positive image and solidarity with their interviewers using fluent and informative speech when promoting their scientific accomplishments, demonstrating readiness for teaching and meeting the preferences of the Department of English. The outcomes of this research could be particularly significant to students: if they were trained in interview communication criteria then they would learn how to enhance their employability chances; to the faculty hiring committees for improving their selection and evaluation practices, and to researchers for connecting professional practices with academic ones through the investigation of the job hunting genre in the academic sphereItem A historical overview of the Victory Statue (Trophée) displayed In the Hippone Archaeological Site Museum – Annaba(2024-01-15) منصوري, فريدةThe city of Hippone, located in the state of Annaba in the far east of Algeria, is considered one of the most important cities historically and culturally through the richness of archaeological evidence dating back to different historical periods. and archaeological finds, whether displayed in museums or kept in storage, Among the important artifacts that the Museum of the Archaeological Site of Hippone abounds in, which is considered a masterpiece worthy of study, is the bronze statue known as Trophé. The trophy is a statue of victory or a monument of the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar, and the word trophy is a designation given to a monument built with stones of large size, to express the victory of the Roman military leaders in wars, of which only six monuments remain, (The trophies of scipione in Piran, the Trophies of Pompey in Panisar, the Trophies of Augustus in Laturbi, the Trophies of Trajan in Romania, the trophies of Sella in Bon Oxen, and finally the Trophies Einobarbus and Maximus in Avan or a statue, but this type It is very rare, The aim of this research was to give a historical overview about the archaeological site of Hippo Regius, in which this artifact was found,Item A linguistic analysis of english according to the neo-khalilian theory at the lexical and supra-lexical levels and its contribution to the teaching of english.(جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله university of Algiers 2 Abu EL Kacem Saad Allah, 2015) Khalout, Fatiha; Khaldi, kamelThis study, entitled "A Linguistic Analysis of English According to The Neo-Khalilian Theory at The Lexical And Supra-Lexical Levels And Its Contribution to The Teaching of English", aims at presenting and discussing the neo-khalilian theory and its concepts, before it considers its applicability to the analysis of one aspect of English grammar, namely the English tense forms. The study also investigates the ways in which this analysis can be translated into teaching materials specifically designed for Computer Assisted Language Learning. Thus, we suggest a computer application labelled SCHEME TESTER whose algorithm is based on this description to validate these linguistic patterns and to propose a tool for the teaching and learning of English tense forms.Item A manual designed to introduce first and second year students of library and information science to the basics of English language use in their field of study(جامعة الجزائر2 أبو القاسم سعد الله Algiers2 University Abu El Kacem Saad Allah, 2024) لدادة, دليلة; LADDADA, DALILAيهدف هذا الدليل إلى تعريف طلاب السنة الأولى والثانية في تخصص علم المكتبات والمعلومات بأساسيات استخدام اللغة الإنجليزية في مجال دراستهم. The study involved the participation of forty undergraduate students, all enrolled in the 2nd year in the Department of English of the University of Algiers 2. The findings revealed that the prior-experience of the studying Linguistics varied between the lower-level and more the higher study conceptions and approaches. At the lower-level are conceptions of Linguistics as accumulation of unrelated pieces linguistic information with the aim of reproducing to meet assessment needs. The adopted approach was a surface one implying the use of retention and memorization as the main learning strategies. Item A PHENOMENOLOGICAL APPROACH TO TEACHERS' AND STUDENTS' EXPERIENCES AND PERCEPTIONS OF CRITICAL THINKING IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEGREE COURSE(University of Algiers 2 Abou El Kacem Saadallah جامعة الجزائر 02 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2021) Melouah, Asma; Bensemmane, Faiza (Directeur de thèse)Recognized as a skill of enduring importance, critical thinking has witnessed increased attention in recent years, but questions still remain regarding its nature, and what constitutes this intellectual value. As a matter-of-fact, the notion of criticality and its place in higher education has been mostly framed within a Western cognitive approach which tends to favour the centrality of skills of reasoning and falls short of extending it beyond the realms of argumentation and logic. Many scholars allude to some abstract universality in thinking while neglecting its relation to cultural context. This study draws on a postmodernist approach, and is framed within an interpretive phenomenological methodology informed by the ideas of phenomenologists such as Heidegger, Merleau Ponty and Van Manen. The aim is to deconstruct existing conceptualizations of critical thinking prominent in Western academic discourse and suggest a reconstruction of the concept by situating it within a non-Western contextual perspective. This study also seeks to investigate the lived experiences and perceptions of university teachers and students of English in the context of Algerian higher education. Qualitative data were collected from 12 teachers and 20 students of English in the Department of Foreign Languages at the University of Medea, using semi-structured teacher and student interviews, participant observation and reflective journal documentation. The diversity of these methods allows triangulation of the results, providing insights on contextuality, relationality and embodiment as significantly shaping the meaning and development of critical thinking in the Algerian university context. Other issues emerged such as authority and the reproduction of inequality, power relations, symbolic violence in the classroom, embodiment of certain forms of habitus and capital, fragmentation of efforts and experiences, religion, culture, politics, the educational LMD system and the EFL curriculum which have a bearing on the development of critical thinking. Therefore, critical thinking is not an abstract subject or a universal ideal mode of thinking that can be nurtured in all students, but its meaning and development are related to relational and contextual realities and to socially and culturally embodied practices which are structured, maintained and reproduced in the classroom and the wider field of EFL higher education.Item A POSTCOLONIAL ECOCRITICAL READING OF FOUR SELECTED NOVELS BY NAIPAUL, COETZEE, ANTHONY AND GHOSH(University of algiers2 Abu El Kacem Saad Allah جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2021) BENDJEMIL, Khawla; Zeghar, Dalila (Directeur de thèse)This thesis examines the element of nature in postcolonial unnamed African country, South Africa, Trinidad and China in V. S. Naipaul’s A Bend in the River (1979), John Maxwell Coetzee’s Waiting for the Barbarians (1980), Michael Anthony’s Bright Road to El Dorado (1983), and Amitav Ghosh's River of Smoke (2011). The study also examines the environment that the characters inhabit (village, town or city), and the role of the colonizer in determining the relationship between the colonizer and the colonized.Item A Quest for an African American Identity in Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man and Toni Morrison’s Beloved(University of Algiers 2 Abou El Kacem Saadallah, 2017) Mansour Boukhtache, Fatima Zahra; Djemaî, FouadThis dissertation is concerned with the issue of African American identity formation in two important contemporary novels: Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man (1952) and Toni Morrison Beloved (1987). While our purpose is to investigate the ways in which the theme of identity in treated in the two novels, our hope is to bring forth their distinctiveness in the African American literary tradition. By exploring the theme of identity in the two novels, I examine the thematic features which reflect the common concerns of the writers as well as the stylistic devices through which they support their thematic preoccupations. By comparing the two novels, we aim to explore the writers’ redefinition of African American identity by taking into account their experimentation at the level of both form and themeItem A QUEST FOR HAPPINESS WILLIAM MORRIS’S NEWS FROM NOWHERE AND WILLIAM DEAN HOWELLS’S A TRAVELER FROM ALTRURIA AND THROUGH THE EYE OF THE NEEDLE(University of Algiers. Faculty of Arts and Languages, 2008) Bensaou, Selma; Amrane, Nadjia (Directeur de thèse)This research work entitled A Quest for Happiness is a comparative study of the utopian romances of the English writer, William Morris (News from Nowhere), and his American counterpart, William Dean Howells (A Traveler from Altruria with its sequel Through the Eye of the Needle). Both writers, in reaction to their 19th century competitive and ugly societies tried to imagine a fairer and more beautiful world. This work is a comparison of the two writers' respective representations of what an ideal society is or should be, with a view to exploring and pinpointing the similarities and differences between the two on the basis of three major ideas which are: Egalitarianism, Agrarianism, and Art. This constitutes our thematic concern in this research. This comparative study will also examine the aesthetic side of the romances as a specific literary genre. The similarities and differences in the romances are explored in the light of the Cultural Materialist theory (essentially as developed in Raymond Williams's seminal work Culture and Society). This approach will enable us to link the romances to their 19th century context, on the one hand, and to open new venues of interpretation more relevant to the 21st century social, economic and even ecological issues, on the other hand. This study is divided into four chapters. The first chapter entitled "The Egalitarian Land" discusses the egalitarian doctrines, and then moves to a close study of the text showing the two writers' egalitarian views. The second chapter entitled "The Agrarian Garden" looks at agrarianism in the contexts of 19th century England and America, a doctrine which helps in the establishment of a more egalitarian society to replace the unfair 19th century social system. A study of the text follows to show the agrarian stance of the two utopias as tackled through the dramatization of incidents and situations in the two romances. The third chapter entitled "Of Beauty and Soul" highlights the artistic side of Morris and his influence by the social and art critic Ruskin. Morris advocated "popular art", an art performed by, and accessible to the common man. This idea he shared with Howells. This part, on the other hand, insists on Howells's more markedly religious stance. The fourth and last chapter deals with the aesthetic study of the two romances. It looks at some major literary devices such as setting and atmosphere, characterization, plot and point of view. It shows how far both Morris's and Howells's romances conform to the genre and prove adequate to the presentation of their ideal society.Item A RE-EVALUATION OF KEY FIGURES’ STRUCTURE AND CONCEPTS IN FEMALE WRITING: CHARLOTTE BRONTE’S JANE EYRE (1847)(جامعة الجزائر 02 أبو القاسم سعد الله University of Algiers 2 Abou El Kacem Saadallah, 2018) BOUGUETTAYA, Imen; Zeghar, Dalila (Directeur de thèse)The present Magister dissertation studies the key figures’ structure and concepts in a female novel: Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre written in 1847. Actually, different disciplines are used when scrutinizing Jane Eyre such as history, politics, economy and philosophy; hence, making of it an interdisciplinary study. This research work is based on both Darko Suvin’s agential theory that is meant to examine the structural arrangement of the narrative and on the Feminist theory whose main goal is to bring an eventual change for women who are subject to alienation, oppression, domination and hegemony. Nonetheless, it is worth pointing out that when studying the structure of the narrative, the socio-historical context is revealed automaticallyItem A Rhetorical analysis of the persuasive(university Abou el Kacem SaadAllah جامعة الجزائر2, 2014) Medjedoub, Rima; Bensemane, M'hamedThe present research was carried out dueb to the importance of persuasive strategies in social and work settings. Therefore, i analysed persuasive political discourse to answer these questions : what are the persuasve devices employed in Barack Obama's 2012 compaign speeches? how are they used? and what are their effects? to analyse the speeches, i suggested a reserved version of Burke's Cluster analysis that permits an inductive analysis which is a newly proposed perspective. the results show that although Obama utilized a combination of strategies , he capitalized on pathos. The findings of such a work can be a source for teachers and students of discourse analysis, literature and written expression.Item A Study of the effect of the discourse-based appraoch to teaching grammar on learners' understanding and use of the past perfect(2012) Khadroun, Salem; Hamitouche, Fatiha (Directeur de thèse)For more than a decade now, first year students at the Université de Formation Continue (UFC) of Djelfa have been taught grammar at the sentence level with much focus on grammar rules which they have to internalize so that they can use and write grammatically correct sentences. However, day-to-day observation of these students show that they do have an acceptable mastery of grammatical structures but are unable to communicate meaningfully and appropriately. In other words, these learners have sufficient grasp of the rules of grammar but use grammatical features in non-native-like ways that cannot be simply categorized as grammatical errors or inappropriate English at the level of the sentence. In the case of tenses, for example, when learners write a piece of discourse of their own , they are unable to control the use of tenses in a sequence of related sentences: they use tenses arbitrarily, overextend the use of a single tense all over the paragraph or jump from one tense to another without a discernible cause or tense markers to justify their choices. This may be due the fact that these learners use tenses without knowing " their contextual or pragmatic motivations and discourse functions" (Celce-Murcia and Olstain, 2000: 68). Furthermore, feedback obtained from the teachers' questionnaire and classroom observation showed that the UFC grammar teachers' main objective is to develop their learners' grammatical competence. It also showed that they give little importance to the discourse functions of the grammar items, neglecting the fact that these items are often determined by factors beyond the sentence. The present study investigates the effect of raising UFC first year students' consciousness to how the past perfect is used and distributed in longer stretches of sentences in view of making them understand and produce it efficiently and appropriately. To this aim, we conducted an experiment research with two matching groups of 12 students each. The experimental group were taught the past perfect through discourse, taking into account the discourse functions of this tense and also its relation with other tenses such as the past simple and the past continuous whereas the control group were taught the same tense using de- contextualized, sentence-level activities. Both groups were pre-tested at the beginning of the experiment and post-tested at its end. The results of the post test indicated a positive effect of the discourse-based approach as the experimental group outperformed the control group.Item A Travel to Nowhere: Paranoia and Escapism in Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow, The Crying of Lot 49, and Donna Tartt’s The Secret History(جامعة الجزائر2 أبو القاسم سعد الله Algiers2 University Abu El Kacem Saad Allah, 2023) Charef شارف, Maroua مروة; Guendouzi, Amar (Directeur de thése)This thesis engages the concepts of paranoia and escapism as means of interpreting postmodern literature. It seeks to provide a description of a theoretical position and a cultural expression associated with postmodernism and to provide a literary criticism of its conclusions. The study uses the novels of Thomas Pynchon and Donna Tartt to explore the postmodern position on the issues of subjectivity and rationality. Item A.P.C.E.I
