Item Persuasive Strategies in Media Discourse: EFL Readers' Perceptions of Objectivity and Bias in English Newspaper Articles A Case Study at Mascara University, Algeria(جامعة الجزائر2 أبو القاسم سعد الله Algiers2 University Abu El Kacem Saad Allah, 2025) BELABBES بلعباس, Ali علي; Hamitouche, Fatiha (Directeur de thèse)Critical media literacy (CML) has emerged as a vital tool to combat misinformation, yet questions remain about whether explicit instruction in critical thinking is more effective than general reading comprehension training. Using an action case research approach, this quasi-experimental study explored the impact of critical thinking instruction on 55 EFL learners’ CML skills. The intervention drew on Toulmin’s argumentation model and Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis to help students evaluate persuasive strategies, bias, and ideological dynamics in public health news articles. Pre- and post-tests combined an adapted California Critical Thinking Skills Test with qualitative analysis of students’ critiques. Results showed significant gains in identifying bias and assessing authorial intent, though students struggled to contextualize ideological influences. While structured argument analysis enhanced awareness of persuasion, deeper engagement with socio-political contexts is needed. The study highlights the promise of explicit critical thinking instruction in CML but calls for scaffolding strategies for complex, ideology-driven texts. Item GENDER PERCEPTIONS AND THEIR EFFECT ON EFL CLASSROOMS IN A MULTI-CULTURAL CONTEXT(جامعة الجزائر2 أبو القاسم سعد الله Algiers2 University Abu El Kacem Saad Allah, 2024) BOUZIDA بوزيدة, Taous طاوس; Souryana, YASSINE (Directeur de thése)This research work answers the main research question of whether EFL teachers’ and learners’ gender perceptions affect their classroom practices and discourses or not. The main objective is to search for potential effect of gender on EFL classrooms by unveiling gender disparities in EFL teachers’ and learners’ gender perceptions, classroom practices, and discourses following a grounded theory methodology. The results unveiled the salience of gender in EFL classrooms as it sheds light on the gender disparities وكشفت النتائج عن أهمية الجندر في أقسام اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية حيث تبرز و تسلط الضوء على الفوارق بين الجنسينItem Assessing Algerian EFL Learners’ Metacognitive Strategy Use in Listening Comprehension(Education and Linguistics Research, 2023-09-10) BOUZAR, SihamDespite the importance attributed to the teaching of English in Algeria which covers the diverse language building blocks namely speaking, writing, reading and listening, students experience constant difficulties with the listening skills. In reality, the listening instruction provided fails to include the strategies that help less-effective learners to understand the oral input with confidence and without any anxiety. Therefore, with the perspective to investigate how listening tasks are processed by EFL learners, an assessment of this proficiency was achieved via adopting a listening test, a questionnaire and a retrospective interview. The results of this investigation helped to uncover the strategies used by Algerian students to overcome their learning difficulties and process the aural input.Item The Place of Phonological Awareness in Algerian Middle School EFL Instruction(Educational and Didactic Research Review, 2023-10-06) ARAR, samiraThe present study explores the place of phonological awareness in middle school EFL instruction in Algeria. It also scrutinizes Algerian middle school EFL teachers’ perceptions on phonological awareness instruction as well as its presence in fourth year English textbook. To this end, two research instruments were used: a document analysis and a questionnaire. The sample study consisted of (20) teachers from different middle schools in Medea province. The findings revealed the dearth in phonological awareness skills especially syllable and onset-rime skills at the level of the school manual. Besides, the majority of participants seemed not realizing the important role of phonological awareness in EFL teaching/learning. Thus, there is an urgent need for integrating more phonological awareness activities in Algerian middle school English textbooks, as well as a call for teacher training to introduce phonological awareness efficiently in classroom practices.Item Investigating EFL Learners’ Motivation in the Algerian Context(University of algiers2 Abu El Kacem Saad Allah جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2014) Kalkoul, Nassima; Hamitouche, Fatiha (Directeur de thèse)Motivation is believed to be one very significant construct that imposes positive impact and enhances the learning in any second language learning context. Two types of motivation are known as the instrumental and integrative according to Gardner and Lambert's (1959) original work on motivation. Drawing from Gardner's motivational theory as the main theoretical framework, the study is planned to investigate the motivation of Algerian secondary school learners towards learning EFL. This study employed a mixed method design in an attempt to answer four main research questions. The sample of the study consisted of 45 third year students attending AbbassLaghrourlycée in Batna . They participated in completing a questionnaire adapted from Gardner's AMTB reflecting their motivation for learning English. Follow up were interviews that provided qualitative data to deepen our understanding of learners' motivation. As it is assumed that learners' achievement may be affected by their motivation type, First Term Exam Grades was the tool used to uncover the motivation type resulting in better achievement. The findings showed that participants of the study have higher degree of instrumentality than integrativeness . Additionally, the open ended item of the questionnaire demonstrated that Algerian secondary school learners hold different reasons for learning EFL. High achievers in this study were mostly motivated integratively (92.9%), and finally, regarding the reasons pushing learners to choose studying English at the university, instrumental orientations were prevailing. Based on the findings, the study concluded with pedagogical recommendations and some implications that may help in directing students' motivation to better learning performance.Item Translanguaging in the EFL Classroom: Students’ Practicesand Teachers’ Attitudes. An Exploratory Study at theDepartment of English, University of Algiers 2 – AbouElkacem Saadallah(University of algiers2 Abu El Kacem Saad Allah جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2022) STIHI, OUMNIA; BESSAI AOUDJIT, NESRINE (Directeur de thèse)This research is an exploratory study which aims at investigating students’ use of translanguging as a strategy for learning and teachers’ attitudes towards this practice. To carry out the research, three data collection tools will be used: two questionnaires, an interview and classroom observation. The obtained data will then be analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. This research is hoped to contribute in the understanding of the notion of translanguaging and to modestly add to the existing body of knowledge in the field of multilingual education in Algeria.
