Item Jean Toomer’s “cane” Or The Search For Racial Identity(Faculté des Langues Etrangères. Université d'Alger 2 Abu al-Qasim Saadallah, 2017-06-01) Kaced, AssiaJim Crow and the continuing supremacist policies that characterized America of the 1920’s considered black people as savages, and placed them, accordingly, at the bottom of the social scale, next to apes. White writers of the era, influenced by the segregationist policies adopted by White America, placed African Americanson the periphery in their literary works. Consequently, the African American writers felt a great need to deconstruct the negative images of their people as drawn by their white counterparts, and try, instead, to make a more authentic representation of their people. In the present article, we will analyze the way Jean Toomer has interrogated, in his novel Cane (1922), the myth upon which racism and the subjugation of black people in America was built.
