CRAFTING PEACE: THE PEACE PROCESS IN NORTHERN IRELAND

Abstract

The Northern Ireland conflict is one of the most protracted disputes in contemporary history, for the region sank into bloodshed for three decades until 1998. Nevertheless, the established peace is in jeopardy due to the repercussions of Brexit. This dissertation aims to comprehend how such protracted conflict amidst a profoundly fragmented society with different stakeholders was eventually resolved. It also seeks to highlight the arduous journey of the peace process to attain it and raise awareness among the newer generations. The study hinges upon a thorough examination of primary and secondary sources. I will attempt to show that the conflict resolution in Northern Ireland stemmed from a combination of factors. Notably, the Provisionals’ violence significantly impacted decisions and, consequently, the dispute settlement.
