A Travel to Nowhere: Paranoia and Escapism in Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow, The Crying of Lot 49, and Donna Tartt’s The Secret History

Abstract

This thesis engages the concepts of paranoia and escapism as means of interpreting postmodern literature. It seeks to provide a description of a theoretical position and a cultural expression associated with postmodernism and to provide a literary criticism of its conclusions. The study uses the novels of Thomas Pynchon and Donna Tartt to explore the postmodern position on the issues of subjectivity and rationality. تتمحور هذه الأطروحة حول بناء مفاهيم جنون العظمة والهروب كمحاولة لتحليل أدب ما بعد الحداثة. حيث تسعى إلى تقديم وصف و نقد للنظريات الفلسفية والتعبير الثقافي الادبي المرتبط بفترة ما بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية. تقوم هذه الدراسة على تحليل بعض الاعمال الروائية للكاتبين الأمريكيين توماس بينشون ودونا تارت بهدف تقصي السياقات الفلسفية لعصر ما بعد الحداثة و خصوصا ما يتعلق بقضايا الذاتية والعقلانية.
