Abstract

This study aimed to explore the intricacies of rural Algerian society in order to uncover the main determinants of reproductive behavior among rural women. For this purpose, a descriptive and analytical approach was applied to a national sample of mothers of reproductive age (15-49 years), comprising 6.628 married rural mothers who had at least one live birth during their reproductive period, based on data from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS6) conducted in Algeria in 2019. The goal was to derive results that would allow us to confirm or refute working hypotheses. The study results indicated that the average age at first marriage for rural women in Algeria was approximately 23,13 years, which reflects on their age at first birth, estimated at 24,92 years. The research also highlights that around 61,7% of the surveyed women gave birth to between 4 to 6 live births. Furthermore, these women predominantly experienced vaginal deliveries, accounting for 76,8%, compared to only 23,2% for cesarean deliveries. Additionally, rural women in Algeria are characterized as breastfeeding mothers at a rate of 87,4%, with nearly three-quarters of the rural mothers in the studied sample breastfeeding their births within a period not exceeding 12 hours, at a rate of 73,8%. The study also indicated that the reproductive behavior of rural women in Algeria is influenced by several surrounding factors, including geographic, demographic, socio-economic, or health-related. Considering that contraceptive methods are among the most significant elements of family planning, this study revealed that nearly two-thirds of the mothers in the sample resort to these methods, at a rate of 68,6%, particularly oral contraceptive pills, which were reported to be used by 74,9% of the mothers.
