Revisiting the Vietnam War: A Postcolonial Critique of Assumptions and Captivity Narratives

Abstract

This thesis revisits the Vietnam War through postcolonial lens in order to expose how American captivity narratives have continuously shaped, sustained, and repackaged imperial assumptions about Vietnam. The representation of the Vietnamese is a focal point in this study, which examines the different interpretations of the war and the ways in which Vietnamese are depicted through captivity narratives, with the aim of amplifying the perspectives of the indigenous people. By revisiting the Vietnam War through a postcolonial lens, we are able to challenge the assumptions and narratives that have shaped our understanding of the conflict. This approach not only provides a more nuanced and complex interpretation of the Vietnam War, but also highlights the importance of considering the perspectives of all parties involved in the conflict.
