This paper examines the 1832 massacre of the El Oufia tribe by French colonial forces near Algiers. While official French history often describes the event as a "punishment" for a robbery, this research reveals a much darker motive: the French State’s plunder of the wealth of Algerians. Led by the Duc de Rovigo, the French military carried out a razzia that resulted in the near-total destruction of the tribe, including women and children. By using the personal diaries of German soldiers in the Foreign Legion and the reports of some French officials, the paper demonstrates that the tribe was a peaceful, "wealthy prey." The paper also documents the tragic execution of Cheikh El Rabia, who was killed to cover up the military's crimes. Ultimately, the massacre failed to terrorize the population and instead helped unite Algerians in their resistance against colonial rule.
