Racial Beauty as an Impediment in The Construction of Black Female Identity in Toni Morrison’s Selected Novels

Abstract

This thesis combines Lacanian psychoanalysis and Judith Butler's feminist theory of performativity to explore gender and identity in Toni Morrison’s works, including The Bluest Eye, Sula, Beloved, Tar Baby, and Song of Solomon. Using Lacanian concepts of the Imaginary, Symbolic, and Real orders, alongside The Mirror Stage, the study examines how Morrison’s characters internalize white beauty standards and navigate racial discrimination. Butler’s theory of gender performativity is applied to understand how Morrison's female protagonists construct their gender identities within rigid societal norms. The research also incorporates theories by Frantz Fanon and Pierre Bourdieu to explore the socio-cultural influences on identity development. By analyzing the intersection of race and gender, the thesis highlights the systemic oppression faced by African American women and their resilience.
