The History Of Al-shehab Newspaper In Algeria And Its Reformist Approach (1925 - 1939)

Abstract

Al-Shehab was a reformist, Islamic, national, and literary newspaper led by Ibn Badis, which played a crucial role in awakening society and promoting unity, justice, Islam, and the Arabic language. It featured a diverse range of content, including religion, literature, historical stories, and global Islamic news, advocating for national awakening and social reform. Ibn Badis's mastery of Quranic interpretation and storytelling made Al-Shehab a platform for high moral values and sincere patriotism. The magazine adapted its topics according to political and social developments and shared insights from both local and international sources, including Arab diaspora publications. The magazine ceased publication at the start of World War II in September 1939, under the decision of its founder, Sheikh Abdelhamid Ben Badis, to avoid being forced by the French authorities to support the war. After Ben Badis passed away on April 16, 1940, the magazine did not resume and remained closed. Al-Shehab stopped with its final issue in September 1939, having published 125 issues across 15 volumes during 14 years of struggle and advocacy for religion, language, and the nation. عُرفت الشهاب في كل ربوع المغرب العربي فكان لها كتاب بتونس والمغرب الأقصى إضافة لبعض الدول العربية في المشرق، كما كانت من أطول مجلات العربية في الجزائر عمرا، وأعظمهن خطرا وأبعدهن أثرا وأغناهن فائدة. وهو ما جعل هذه المجلة مقصد الأدباء والمفكرين والمثقفين عامة فلاقت على الرواج والانتشار ما جعلها مجلة أقطار المغرب العربي كله وليس الجزائر فقط . يقول عبد الملك مرتاض -" لم يرى الناس في الجزائر مجلة أو صحيفة يومية أو أسبوعية مما عبر ومضى من المجلات والصحف لقد تجاوزت الشهاب حدود الجزائر والمغرب العربي إلى المشرق الإسلامي حيث لقيت إشادة وتشجيعا على جهودها الإصلاحية والأدبية كانت هي المجلة الأولى بالجزائر، بل بالمغرب العربي التي نادت بمقاومة التغريب والتجزئة والتجنيس ومطاردة الاستعباد، ودعت إلى حماية الأمة العربية كوسيلة لحماية الوحدة العربية والاسلامية.
