Using Critical Discourse Analysis to Raise Learners’ Awareness about Power Relations in Literary Texts The Case Study of Master One Students at the English Department of Khenchela University

Abstract

This dissertation aspires to investigate the practicability of implementing Critical Discourse Analysis to raise learners’ awareness about power relations in literary texts. Correspondingly, an exploratory sequential mixed methods design was implemented. A sample of 56 Master 1 students at the department of English at Khenchela University was divided equally into an experimental and control group, and a quasi- experimentation was applied. Before conducting the experiment, an interview with seven teachers of literature and a questionnaire with the experimental group students were effectuated. Besides, a post-experiment questionnaire was administered to the same group to investigate their attitudes regarding the integration of CDA in literature classes. The results obtained from the investigation tools reveal that implementing CDA in literature classes would enhance learners’ interpretive skills and analysis of power relations, especially as teachers and students alike have welcomed its integration. تطمح هذه الأطروحة إلى التحقق من مدى إمكانية تطبيق التحليل النقدي للخطاب لرفع وعي المتعلمين حول علاقات القوة في النصوص الأدبية. لتحقيق هذا، تم استخدام تصميم الأساليب الهجينة الاستكشافية، اذ تم تقسيم عينة مكونة من 56 طالبا من طلاب الماستر 1 بقسم اللغة الإنجليزية بجامعة خنشلة بالتساوي إلى مجموعة تجريبية وضابطة، وتم تطبيق أسلوب شبه التجريب. وقبل إجراء التجربة تم إجراء مقابلة مع سبعة من معلمي الأدب واستبيان مع طلاب المجموعة التجريبية. علاوة على ذلك، تم توزيع استبيان ما بعد التجربة على نفس المجموعة للتحقق من مواقفهم فيما يتعلق بدمج تحليل الخطاب في دروس الأدب. تكشف النتائج التي تم الحصول عليها من أدوات التحقيق أن تطبيق تحليل المحتوى النقدي في فصول الأدب من شأنه أن يعزز مهارات التفسير لدى المتعلمين وتحليل علاقات القوة، خاصة وأن المعلمين والطلاب على حد سواء قد رحبوا باستعماله
