Investigating Students‟ Ability to Transfer Writing Knowledge from General English to ESP Case study: High School of Banks‟ students

Abstract

The study aimed at investigating first year students’ ability to transfer writing knowledge from General English to ESP at the Ecole Superieure des Banques (ESB)-Bouzareah. Through this study we wanted to know whether the prior knowledge of General English acquired by ESB students’ allows them to write good formal letters. The number of participants was 88 who represent first year students from both Brevet Superieur de Banque (BSB) and Diplome Superieur d’Etudes Bancaire DSEB cycles. In order to achieve the aims of the study, the researcher used three tools for data collection that included a questionnaire, students’ draft and an interview. The results of the study have shown the following: The ESB students showed a great dissatisfaction with all aspects of the writing program. There have been differences in needs between males and females. Besides students have a great deficiency in writing in all the categories of writing and their rating to their ESP teachers was relatively low. تهدف الدراسة الى بحث قابلية الطلبة لتحويل معارفهم من الكتابة في اللغة الانجليزية العامة الى الكتابة في اللغة المتخصصة لطلبة المدرسة العليا للصرفة. من خلال هذه الدراسة أردنا معرفة اذ كانت المعرفة المسبقة للغة الانجليزية العامة تمكن الطلبة من كتابة رسائل إدارية في المستوى. تتكون العينة من 88 طالب و تمثل السنوات الاولى للطورين استعملت الباحثة ثلاث ادواة كوسيلة لجمع المعطيات وهي اوراق الطلبة. الاستبيان و المقابلة. جاءت نتائج الدراسة كما يلي اظهرت الدراسة عجز كبير لدى الطلبة لكتابة رسائل ادارية بالاظافة الى عدم رضى عن كل جوانب برنامج الكتابة المدرسوجود فروق ذات دلالة بين الذكور و الإناث لصالح الإناث تقييم الطلبة لاساتذتهم كان ضعيف الى حد كبير تقييم الطلبة لطرق التقييم كان ايضا ضعيف في النهاية قدمت الباحثة بعض التوصيات للجهات المعنية
