Currently, the disabled person is not viewed as a burden on his family and society. Rather, he is an active individual like other individuals who has a role to play and has the right to get a job, start a family, and enjoys all his rights guaranteed to him by the society in which he lives. This study touched on the issue of people with special needs, by referring to the most important genetic and environmental causes that lead to disability, then defining special education and mentioning the reasons for its emergence and development in various countries, as it plays a pivotal role in the process of preparing and rehabilitating people with special needs and shaping them from early childhood. This is done by developing educational programs that suit the characteristics and requirements of this segment of society. The reforms in our universities have brought in new perspectives to teaching as well as learning. These reforms are aimed to assist students to become autonomous as much as possible. The present paper sheds light on learners’ autonomy and related variables. Students’ outcomes are not simply associated with their mental and cognitive ability or disability, but they are also related to personal characteristics such as motivation, self-esteem and risk-taking.
