Abstract

Abstract The Arabic language is a fundamental component of the Arab-Islamic identity, a vessel that carries the Arab-Islamic heritage and a tool for thought, culture, and literature. It has been subjected to attacks from the West and, behind them, the Orientalists. To elaborate on this idea further, this research paper aims to shed light on the role played by the Orientalists in marginalizing the classical Arabic language from cultural and literary life, under the pretext of its difficulty in being used by speakers and its inability to keep up with modernity. This was driven by their desire to eliminate, weaken, and destroy its intellectual and religious heritage, while promoting the vernacular and using it as a tool for literary expression. However, their claims and lies did not succeed, and they failed to achieve their goal. The classical Arabic language remained strong, preserving its beauty and immortality, and was not diminished by successive generations, unlike what happened to similar ancient languages, which have completely faded away from the mouths of their speakers. Keywords: dialectal Arabic; Orientalism; Western criticism; Arabic language; Orientalists' attitudes. الملخص تعد اللغة العربية مقوما أساسيا من مقومات الشخصية العربية الإسلامية، ووعاء يحمل التراث العربي الإسلامي وأداة الفكر والثقافة والأدب. وقد تعرضت لحرب من لدن الغرب ومن ورائهم المستشرقين. ولبسط هذه الفكرة أكثر تأتي هذه الورقة البحثية؛ لتسلط الضوء على الدور الذي قام به المستشرقون في إقصاء اللغة العربية الفصحى من الحياة الثقافية والأدبية، بحجة صعوبة تداولها في أوساط المتكلمين، وقصورها عن مواكبة الحداثة، رغبة منهم في القضاء عليها وإضعافها ونسف تراثها الفكري والديني، والتمكين للعامية واتخاذها أداة للتعبير الأدبي، غير أنه لم يُكتب لادعاءاتهم وأكاذيبهم النجاح، ولم يتمكنوا من تحقيق غايتهم، وبقيت العربية الفصحى قوية محافظة على روعتها وخلودها، ولم تنل منها الأجيال المتعاقبة على نقيض ما حدث للغات القديمة المماثلة التي انزوت تماما بين ألسنة مستعمليها . الكلمات المفتاحية: العامية؛ الاستشراق؛ النقد الغربي؛ اللغة العربية؛ مواقف المستشرقين
