Abstract

This study investigates legal phraseme translation from Arabic into English through a corpus-based analysis of Algerian commercial lease agreements and their official translations. It addresses the question: What categories of legal phrasemes characterize Algerian commercial lease agreements, and how are they rendered into English by official Algerian translators? The study uses a parallel corpus of ten Algerian commercial lease agreements, each with two official translations, and a corpus linguistics approach to extract, classify, and analyse the phrasemes and their translations. Findings show that these phrasemes fit Biel’s taxonomy. Functional equivalence is the most frequent technique, followed by literal equivalence, while other techniques occur less often. Literal equivalence is not always appropriate, as it may produce uncommon or terminologically inaccurate renderings in legal English; therefore, it should be used cautiously, with verification of equivalents obtained through French as an intermediary language and attention to English legal drafting conventions.
