Abstract

While some scholars are questioning the concept of American exceptionalism, this belief nonetheless holds a powerful position in the nature of American political tradition. The theme of American exceptionalism has been used in political speeches from the inception of the United States as an independent nation. It is almost impossible to overstate the power and seduction that American exceptionalism holds in U.S. politics and culture. The presence of religious rhetoric and the belief in American exceptionalism in American political tradition have been constant throughout history, becoming even more visible in the post-war period. This dissertation greatly furthers our understanding of this important subject. It is valuable for anyone interested in the study of American exceptionalism as history, myth, and ideology and the challenges of using civil religion in American politics.
