Item The Ruling and the Ruled(University of algiers2 Abu El Kacem Saad Allah جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2017) NEMIR EDDOUAOUDA, Selma; BENSAFI, Zoulikha (Directeur de thèse)This research attempts a comparative study between E. M. Forster’s A Passage to India and Yasmina Khadra’s What the Day Owes the Night. This comparison explores separateness between the ruling and the ruled community in both novels as a major theme. The distance that separates each group from one another in Colonial India is exposed as a dramatic chasm that prevents every attempt at coexistence between the English and the Indians. Separateness in Khadra’s imagination is an allusion to escape. In other words, Forster exposes separation to emphasize the necessity of connection between the Anglo-Indians and the Indians in Colonial India. Unlike Forster, Khadra inserts the concept of separateness to reveal the idea of escape that haunts Younes and the group of pieds-noirs because all of them try to settle a new life off the sad and ambiguous past they had once survived. In fact, the Europeans of Oran strive to distance themselves from the Arabs as if they want to suppress their existence in Algeria.Item Investigating Teacher Development through Exploratory Practice in Algerian Secondary Education EFL Classes(University of algiers2 Abu El Kacem Saad Allah جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2017) BOUKERROU, Imane; BENSAFI, Zoulikha (Directeur de thèse)This study fits in the area of L2 classroom research. It attempted to address the topic of teacher-research through the framework of Exploratory Practice for teacher development in Algerian Secondary School EFL classrooms. The study had two main objectives (1) examining the significance of EP as an approach to teachers’ PD in addition to exploring the constraints encountered by the informants during their EP experiences; and (2) exploring the sustainability of doing EP over long timeframe and the factors that influenced it. Our investigation adopted a qualitative case study paradigm, thus, two qualitative research tools (semi-structured interviews and open ended questionnaires) were utilized to collect data from four teachers of English language at two different Secondary Schools in the area of Bouira. The study ran for five months consisting of the first and the second semesters of the academic year 2015/2016. All our informants participated in an EP workshop/training before they could embark on the EP project. The necessity of organizing an EP workshop/training might be justified by the fact that all our participants were unfamiliar with the concept of teacher-research when they accepted to take part in this studyItem An Investigation of the Factors Influencing Teachers’ Acceptance and Use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in EFL Classrooms:(University of algiers2 Abu El Kacem Saad Allah جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2022) Kouider, MAKHLOUF; BENSAFI, Zoulikha (Directeur de thèse)Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays an important role in modern Higher Education Institutions by facilitating and improving the teaching and learning process. Little is known about the factors that influence Algerian EFL teachers to accept and use ICT in teaching practices. This study aimed to bridge that gap by adopting a modified version of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology. This mixed methods sequential explanatory study investigated the factors related to teachers' acceptance and usage of ICT in EFL classrooms at the Department of English at Hassiba Benbouali University of Chlef. The results showed that teachers' intentions to incorporate ICT are positively impacted by attitude. Behavioural Intention and Facilitating Conditions were the strongest determinants of teachers' actual use of ICT. Gender and age moderated the relationship between Performance Expectancy and the Behavioural Intention to use ICT. Furthermore, the teaching experience of the teachers moderated the relationship between the two psychological factors of Facilitating Conditions and Attitude toward Using Technology with the Behavioural Intention to use ICT Item The Effect of Strategies Instruction on Students’ Writing Performance:Investigating the Effects of Rhetorical and Outlining Strategies on Students’ Composition Organization(University of algiers2 Abu El Kacem Saad Allah جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2021) Aït abdeslam, Faïza; BENSAFI, Zoulikha (Directeur de thèse)Writing in a Second or a Foreign Language is a complex activity that EFL students often meet when learning English. Similarly, teaching writing is often seen as much complex as learning to write. Thus, teachers are required to find ways to facilitate it. The aim of this current research is to promote writing strategies instruction as a way to improve Algerian students’ English writing performance. Our particular focus in this study is outlining strategies as well as rhetorical strategies on students’ argumentative essay. To achieve this aim, a quasi- experimental method has been selected as a method of investigation. The results of the experiment show that the experimental group recorded a significant statistical progress measured through the T-test. This study implicates that direct strategies instruction is an effective way to help students improve their writing performanceItem An Exploration of EFL Teachers’ Attitudes Toward Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Algeria(University of Algiers 2 Abou El Kacem Saadallah جامعة الجزائر 02 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2017) Kouider, MAKHLOUF; BENSAFI, Zoulikha (Directeur de thèse)This study aimed to explore the attitudes of Secondary School EFL teachers in the Western District of Chlef toward Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Algeria. Additionally, the study attempted to investigate the relationship between teachers’ attitudes and five independent variables: personal characteristics, computer attributes, cultural perceptions, computer competence, and computer access. Mixed methods research was used combining both quantitative and qualitative research methods. A questionnaire and semi-structured interview were used in order to collect the data. The findings indicated that EFL teachers held positive attitudes toward ICT in education. There were statistically significant positive correlations between teachers’ attitudes toward ICT and the five aforementioned independent variables. It was also found that Age and Academic Qualification had a negative correlation with attitudes.Item EXPLORING THE CONSTRUCT OF LEARNER AUTONOMY IN RELATION TO METACOGNITIVE KNOWLEDGE AMONG THE HIGH, THE AVERAGE, AND THE LOW ACHIEVING STUDENTS(جامعة الجزائر 02 أبو القاسم سعد الله University of Algiers 2 Abou El Kacem Saadallah, 2022) BELLIMANE BENOUALI, Hind; BENSAFI, Zoulikha (Directeur de thèse)The study undertaken in this thesis, entitled “Exploring the Construct of Learner Autonomy in Relation to Metacognitive Knowledge among the High, the Average, and the Low Achieving Students. The Case of Algerian Third Year Students at ENS Bouzareah”, concerns and applies to EFL Writing skill specifically, as it represents one of the challenging skills for EFL students. This is the case of ENSB (i.e., Ecole Normale Supérieure de Bouzareah) EFL students who are unlikely to produce quality written content works. To explore the problem, only two factors are sought in the current thesis. First, ENSB students’ EFL Writing impediments may be due to their dependency on the teacher as the depository of knowledge. Second, the problem may lie in their limited metacognitive knowledge in EFL Writing. The purpose of this thesis is to explore whether or not Third Year ENSB students’ proficiency levels in EFL Writing are related to their readiness for autonomy and metacognitive knowledge. The current exploratory thesis involves two phases. In phase one, the objective is to explore ENSB students’ profile in terms of readiness for autonomy and metacognitive knowledge in EFL Writing, and in phase two, focus is put on gaining insights into the relationship between ENSB Third Year students’ proficiency levels, their readiness for autonomy, and their metacognitive knowledge. Content analysis reveals the unfamiliarity of the participants with the decisions conducting to autonomous learning. Quantitative data obtained from statistical analyses, indicate a weak association between ENSB Third Year students’ proficiency levels and both their readiness for autonomy and metacognitive knowledgeItem Investigating Teachers' Beliefs Towards Culture Integration in Algerian Secondary Education EFL Classes(University of Algiers 2 Abou El Kacem Saadallah جامعة الجزائر 02 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2017) HANNACHI, Rachid; BENSAFI, Zoulikha (Directeur de thèse)This study was conducted toinvestigate some Algerian Secondary Education English teachers’ beliefsregarding the integration of culture in ELT and their classroom practices. A questionnaire and a semi-structured interview were introduced to collectexclusively the data from fifty teachers who were teaching English at a foreign languagein BBA. We attempted to use a triangulation of more than one method to collectdata. The results obtained from the study showed these teachers had positiveattitudes to culture integration in the curriculum. The findings showed a mismatch between teachers’ definition of theobjectives of culture teaching and their actual classroom practices. We hope these findingswill contribute to a better understanding of the current practice of culture teaching in ELT and enhancethe quality of both teachers’ pre-service education and in-service training in Algeria.Item The Absence of Interaction in Algerian University EFL Classrooms(University of Algiers 2 Abou El Kacem Saadallah جامعة الجزائر 02 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2016) CHERIDI, Abderachid; BENSAFI, Zoulikha (Directeur de thèse)This study fits in the area of L2 classroom research. It attempts to address the topic of interaction in Algerian university EFL classrooms. The study hastwo major objectives: (1) exploring the extent of the presence or absence of interaction in Algerian university EFL classrooms, both in the form of students’ belief structures or in the form of classroom practices; and (2) exploring and understanding the potential effects of the absence of interaction in university EFL classrooms on students’ affective factors.Item THE STATUS OF ENGLISH AMID LARGE-SCALE ENTERPRISES IN THE ALGERIAN ECONOMY(جامعة الجزائر 02 أبو القاسم سعد الله University of Algiers 2 Abou El Kacem Saadallah, 2022) BEDDIAF, Abdelghafour; BENSAFI, Zoulikha (Directeur de thèse)The present thesis is an investigation about the status of English within the large-scale business settings in the Algerian economic context, particularly multinational companies. Little research has targeted English in multinationals, and none has addressed the issue of English status amid large-scale globalized business enterprises in Algeria. One of the fundamental presumptions directing this research is the axiomatic acknowledgement of English spread worldwide, and the roles it plays as a global linguistic phenomenon for communication even among non-native speakers. At industry level, English is perceived to be a Business English as Lingua Franca (BELF)Item Ethnicity, Multiculturalism, and Islamophobia(University of Algiers 2 Abou El Kacem Saadallah, 2021) TABBI, Badreddine; BENSAFI, Zoulikha (Directeur de thèse)The tangled history of American immigration has long been circumfluent with the ambivalences of ethnicity, nativism, and assimilation. Since its primeval cradle, the American national portrait has been painted in sundry shades of immigrants from different arrays of the world along with a paradoxical sentiment of at times cherishing and other times damning their experiences in the American mainstream. The present study examines the mounting hues and cries raised over Arab immigration to the United States within anti-immigration animus climate of discrimination, Islamophobia and Multiculturalism. As a highly visible group in the aftermath of 9/11, islampophobic and anti-immigrant sentiments, particularly in the current President Donald Trump's tenure, have relentlessly made scapegoats of Arab immigrants for a myriad of social ills that ail the American national unity and hegemony. They have borne the brunt of the most hostile assaults on the grounds that the deep-seated Anglo-Protestant culture and American democratic values are undergoing undermining changes with threatening implications due to their immigration.
